Prayer Pillowcases

Prayer pillowcases provide for good health, while giving our local homeless and others in transition a hug they can carry with them throughout the year.  Sewn by loving hands and then touched by the sweet prayers and artwork of a child, they demonstrate the warmth and caring we all crave. Since the winter of 2006/2007 Girlfriends Care has distributed over 4000 pillowcases in San Diego County.

Background

Pillowcases are a wonderful gift for our local homeless especially during the cold, winter months when the shelters are open.  Having one’s own pillowcase not only provides comfort, but can help to prevent the spread of head lice.  These cases are all sewn by local volunteers using soft, flannel cloth which provides extra comfort against skin chapped by many hours of outdoor exposure.

The best part of this project, and that most favored by our neighbors who receive them, is the gift of prayer by our kids.  Our homeless are all going through rough times and often feel unloved or unlovable.  That a child would take the time to pray just for them truly touches their hearts!  It is an incredible experience to see how much your sweet prayers can bless someone.

Each year approximately 700 cases are distributed to our homeless and hurting neighbors in San Diego, with most distributed in the North County communities of Oceanside, Vista and Carlsbad.

Distribution starts on December 1 with the opening of the winter shelter at Bread of Life Rescue Mission in Oceanside and continues through February.  Most are distributed at local agencies’ locations, oftentimes when a hot meal is served to these neighbors in need. This project is beloved by those who participate and  those who receive the pillowcases each year.

How Does It Happen?

Step 1:  Making the Pillowcases

Each pillowcase is hand-sewn by a girlfriend using a soft, flannel cloth.

Step 2:  Kids Pray and Decorate

Each pillowcase includes a prayer, with artwork or words of encouragement from a child.

Step 3:  Distribution

Pillowcases are distributed locally each winter beginning December 1.
